Quick Facts
Location:
Fort Christiansvaern
An absolute necessity for life, the kitchen. Ahead is a wood furnace. The bottom hole was where the firewood was inserted and burned heating the upper area where bread could be baked. The back room was where other food was cooked. Hot coals were placed on the bricks, and on top of that the pots to cook food. To the right, the 13,000 gallon cistern lies with its green lid. This was a place of normal activities we ourselves participate everyday in.

Imagine the difference though between your modern kitchen and your grandparents kitchen when they were kids, much has changed. Now ponder on how the kitchen has changed from the 1700s to the 1900s.

This kitchen here in the fort too has changed throughout the ages. See if you can find clues of how this kitchen may have been altered or changed. Maybe old markings on the wall, or divots on the floor?
