Public restrooms are located near the Mine Storeroom and Ferry Pier, about 500 feet from the entrance to Fort Pickens. They stand on the foundation of the Cable Tank building.
This large, rectangular concrete foundation is all that remains of the Cable Tank. Inside this the structure, the Army stored electrical cables in water-filled drums. These cables were used for the submarine mine defenses on Pensacola Bay. The Cable Tank was first constructed in 1898, but was destroyed by the June 1899 explosion at Fort Pickens' Bastion D. The Army rebuilt the Cable Tank, with some new modifications, by 1900.
