Suttler
"Suttler" was an 18th century term for a civilian merchant that followed the army. Various suttlers and fur traders were associated with Fort Stanwix during the American Revolution, mainly serving as a means to provide “cheap and plentiful trade” to the local American Indian population. Suttlers directly attached to a regiment provided soldiers with the opportunity to purchase extra food and drink to supplement their everyday rations.
