The commandant of a fort, especially one as remote as Fort Stanwix, is trusted to be an excellent leader. Because the commandant of a regiment would travel with their men to their next assignment, many men were responsible for the safety of Fort Stanwix and the Great Carry it protected. In 1777, Col. Peter Gansevoort commanded the fort during the 21-day British siege. Only 28-years-old at the time, Gansevoort later received from Congress the ceremonial title of "Colonel Commandant of Fort Schuyler" for his defense of the fort.
