Although early twentieth century island residents and guests enjoyed a variety of outdoor recreational activities, indoor recreation was available as well. Standing in ruins before you is the Recreation Building. Built around 1900, what remains of this building provides a glimpse into the recreational opportunities available to the Carnegie family and their guests. This Queen Anne structure held a doctor’s office, billiard room, gun room, dressing rooms, gymnasium, heated pool, and on the southeast side, an apartment for Lucy Carnegie’s bachelor son Frank. Guests traveled to the ocean for health benefits so many island activities were outdoors: hunting, shelling, tennis, croquet, shrimping and fishing, and swimming.
