Union troops stubbornly held this position throughout the day of April 6, giving Grant time to prepare a strong defensive line closer to Pittsburg Landing. On April 7, soldiers from Buell's army steadily pressed John C. Breckinridge's Confederate corps southward to recover this sector of the battlefield.
