Near sundown on April 6, two wooden gunboats (timberclads), the Lexington and Tyler, anchored opposite the mouth of Dill Branch to add naval support to Grant's defense of Pittsburg Landing. Cannon fire from these vessels helped repulse the final Confederate assault of the day across this rugged ravine.
