Devils Garden Overlook offers views on many North Carolina mountains, as well as access to the Mountains-to-Sea trail. The lore behind the area’s name is diverse. Some say it is named after the many rattlesnakes that use the rocks and forest floor in the area as protection. Others offer that the terrain here is so rough that only the devil could traverse it.

Regardless of the overlook’s naming, it offers visitors views of Sugarloaf Mountain, Chestnut Mountain, Rich Mountain and more. The topography of this overlook creates a “V”, providing a window for the mountains in the distance to be seen.

The overlook is an access point for the Mountains-to-Sea trail. This 1,175-mile-long, North Carolina hiking trail stretches from the Great Smoky Mountains on the western edge of the state, to the Outer Banks at the eastern edge.
