Father Damien, also known as Saint Damien, is famous for his dedication and devotion to people with Hansen's disease. During his time in Kalaupapa, he cared for the spiritual and physical needs of patients separated from their families. He eventually contracted Hansen's disease but continued to work and serve the community until he died in 1889. His work exemplifies the triumph of the human spirit over great adversity.
