During the morning's fighting on Matthews Hill on 21 July 1861, soldiers from the 71st New York State Milita wheeled two boat howitzers into position. The guns rendered effective service alongside the Rhode Island Battery.
In the retreat following the battle, the howitzers were abandoned and captured near Cub Run.
