Any trip to Shiloh National Military Park should start with a visit to the Corinth Battlefield Visitor Center. With three short, informational films regarding life in and around Corinth during the Civil War, and an array of engaging museum exhibits and wartime artifacts, the Corinth Center gives visitors a deep, holistic look into why this part of Mississippi and neighboring Tennessee saw so much military activity between 1862 and 1864.
The Corinth Battlefield Visitor Center features many rare and unique historic items. Original battle flags for the Corinth Rifles, the 11th Mississippi Infantry, and the 6th Missouri Infantry adorn museum walls. Union and Confederate uniform items, horse tack, and even an original regimental adjutant’s field desk are all on display.
Adjacent to the building is a recreation of a Civil War fortification similar to those constructed in Corinth during the summer of 1862, with two original 12-pounder Napoleon cannon stationed at the embrasures.
A 3.8-inch James Rifle on a replica gun carriage greets visitors in the lobby; a careful examination of the barrel reveals its significance to events in Corinth on October 4, 1862.
In the courtyard behind the Corinth Center visitors can view a water feature that tells the story of the United States from 1770 through 1870. The running water, subtle details, and tranquil setting encourage reflection and remembrance.
Do you have an ancestor who fought in the Civil War? Are you a student who needs to do some research on the Civil War? Or are you just a history buff looking to learn more? The Corinth Battlefield Visitor Center has a research library that is open to the public which contains rosters, regimental histories, the Official Records, and more!
The exhibits and artifacts on display at the Corinth Battlefield Visitor Center are intended to present the entire story of Corinth during the American Civil War, providing visitors with the opportunity to connect to the history on a personal level.
