Commissary Store
The commissary was constructed in 1919 and was separated from the Naval Radio Station by the radio tower. The building was constructed of concrete and measured approximately 40 feet wide by 60 feet long.
In 1949, the Navy converted the building into the Treasurer’s Office. There was also a garage located behind the building. When the Department of the Interior took over administration of American Samoa from the Navy in 1951, the building was later used as a post office. In 1971, a new post office was constructed (across the street), and the government decided to move the Jean P. Haydon Museum from Government House to this location. The commissary and the garage were converted into the museum we see today.
