Originally this structure was built for the commanding officer of the Fort McHenry garrison to live in. In 1814 Major George Armistead lived here, meaning that the commander of the fort not only had his command come under fire, but his home too. The building, however, does not reflect the original appearance. In 1837 the structure was remodeled and repurposed as another barracks building in the fort, and commanding officeres had stuctures outside of the fort that they lived in.
The left most door of the front of the building leads to a first floor exhibit that talks about Major Armistead, the creation of the Star-Spangled Banner flag, and how areas of this building would have looked in 1814. There is a rear entrance as well, and the building is open during normal visitation hours.
