The Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, managed by the Susquehanna National Heritage Area, welcomes visitors to experience the dynamic heritage and recreation opportunities of the lower Susquehanna River. As a Chesapeake Gateways Place, Columbia Crossing serves as a gateway visitor center and trailhead for land and water trails, including access to the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail.

Located along the riverfront in Columbia, Pennsylvania, the Center provides maps, guides, educational exhibits, and visitor services that highlight the Susquehanna’s historic, cultural, and ecological significance. Visitors can enjoy the Riverview Deck overlooking the river, explore the ADA-accessible Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, or launch paddle craft and powerboats from Columbia River Park.

Rotating exhibits and programs tell stories of commerce, conservation, and resilience; from the African American-owned lumber mill supporting freedom seekers, to ongoing efforts to restore the river’s ecological balance. Columbia Crossing emphasizes education and stewardship, particularly through youth programming designed to inspire future caretakers of the river and the Chesapeake Bay.

With strong partnerships, welcoming staff, and a deep commitment to inclusive storytelling, Columbia Crossing invites visitors to explore, learn, and connect with the rich landscape and history of the Susquehanna River. Learn more about planning your visit by visiting the Susquehanna National Heritage Area website.
