Scenic View/Photo Spot

Hike to a collapsed lava tube along the Boca Trail! Formed of Capulin Basalt, this collapsed lava tube shows one of the ways that lava erupted from Capulin Volcano.

Lava tubes are formed when the top of a lava flow hardens and the outer shell becomes solid. When molten lava no longer flows through the area, a hollow tube is left. Sometimes, these hollow tubes collapse and can be identified by linear rubble piles left over from the collapsed roof.
