Why does the landscape flatten out here? As the Piedmont hills transition into the coastal plain on the eastern edge of Prince William Forest Park, the soil becomes sandier, the hills become gentler, and creeks widen as they flow towards the Potomac River. Standing beside Quantico Creek here, you can notice the sandy silt and small river rocks; quite a difference from the large rocks that stretch the length of the creek just upstream.
