Gateway to the Caribbean: The Story of Danish Christiansted

As you stand in the heart of Christiansted, it is easy to admire the colorful buildings, palm-lined waterfront, and calm harbor. But for more than two centuries, this was one of the most important ports not only in the Danish West Indies, but the New World. Ships arrived carrying goods, people, news, and ideas from around the Atlantic world. Merchants conducted business along the waterfront, government officials oversaw trade, soldiers guarded the harbor, and residents built lives in a growing island town.

Christiansted did not develop by accident. Its location along a protected natural harbor made it an ideal center for commerce and government. From here, sugar, rum, cotton, and other products left St. Croix for markets across Europe and North America. In return came manufactured goods, supplies, humans and influences that helped shape life on the island.

Over the course of this tour, you'll explore the buildings and places that helped Christiansted function as a thriving Caribbean port town. Together, they tell the story of trade, government, defense, faith, and community during the Danish colonial era.

As we begin, take a moment to look around. Many of the historic structures you'll visit can still be seen from this spot, standing as reminders of the people and events that shaped Danish Christiansted.
