Quick Facts
The Overmountain Men crossed the South Holston River at Choate's Ford on September 24, 1780 while on their way to Sycamore Shoals along the old Watuga Road. Chaote's Ford was perfect for fording the river as the depth is low enough for men and horses to cross. The men had left the muster grounds in Abingdon Virginia and were on their way to fight at Kings Mountain.
