Know Where You Can Go
Did you know that every dog has a unique paw print? Like a human fingerprint, a paw print has a unique pattern that is exclusive to just one dog. Just like a paw print, every single park, memorial, monument, or historic site managed by the National Park Service is unique. The stories they tell are tied to the location and each one protects different resources. That also means that a rule that makes sense at one park might not make sense at another. Some parks allow people and pets to walk or hike anywhere (as long as they follow all other rules and wear a leash). Some parks might only allow dogs on roads or paved trails, because their resources are more delicate. That's why it's important to know where pets can go in a park and to research ahead on the park's website.
Knowing where you can go inside is just as important as knowing where you can go outside. Park visitor centers allow service animals, but not pets or emotional support animals. A service animal is trained in a specific task to assist a person with a disability.
At Chamizal, people and pets can explore anywhere their paws take them. Just don't forget to wear a leash and to keep an eye out for holes built by burrowing animals!
Congratulations! You have made it all the way to the end of the BARK Ranger guided walk at Chamizal National Memorial! We hope that you learned a lot about visiting parks with pets. We hope that you will share what you learned with others and remember the BARK Ranger promises wherever your adventures take you!
Happy Trails and Happy Tails!
