Cerro Abrigo is a prominent lava dome that can be seen from the Entrance Station. Look closely for the terraced logging roads leading to the top of the dome. This is perhaps the most obvious example of scars left behind from 20th-century logging operations. There is a popular backcountry hiking trail that circles this dome, offering fantastic, panoramic views of Valles Caldera. Keep an eye out for elk and black bear and listen for the distinctive cry of the pika.
