CCC Spur Trail Stop 2: Fallen Tree
Quick Facts
Location:
Davis Bayou, MS
In front of you on either side of the path is the remnants of a Live Oak tree that fell across the trail. Instead of removing the tree, rangers separated the trunk into two pieces and left them to decompose. This was done for the betterment of the environment, because while decaying vegetation may look unappealing, it serves an important role in forest habitats.
Felled trees are essential in aiding plant regeneration, cycling nutrients, providing food, and serving as wildlife habitat. While passing this trunk look closely and you can see several species of fungi, insects, and plants that call this trunk home.
