Calumet and Hecla Mining Company built Warehouse No. 1 (1893-1894) to consolidate its scattered supplies and to centralize ordering and distribution. The Warehouse was designed by Calumet and Hecla’s architectural staff. It stands 2½ stories tall. This industrial building has an exterior of red brick masonry with a basalt rock foundation. Built alongside a railroad spur to facilitate deliveries, the interior of the warehouse features parallel rows of storage bays along a central passage. Inside, you would have found various items necessary for mining - from helmets and boots, to spare nuts and bolts.
