The Calumet & Hecla Mining Company built a massive railroad operation to transport copper ore from the mine to stamp mills and smelters, and to import other materials. The roundhouse was built to service this Hecla & Torch Lake Railroad. At the time most steam locomotives could only drive in one direction, so a turntable was needed for them to turn around. The circular house built around the table was often used for storage and servicing of railroad equipment. Altered for modern use, the rounded sides of the building indicate its former use beside a central turntable. The building is now privately owned. Please respect private property.
