The Calumet and Hecla powder house is one of the oldest of the companies surviving above ground structures. Thick poor-rock walls were chosen to limit damage in case of accidental explosion. A thick banded iron door compliments the walls as an additional safety measure. The explosives miners used to blast away rock were stored here to keep them stable and prevent accidents. The building is situated away from high traffic areas of the mine property.
