The life of a lockkeeper was hard work! The lockkeeper was expected to move boats through the lock at all hours, every day of the week. In exchange, they received a rent-free house, approximately $150 a year (increasing over the years), and an acre of land for a garden and livestock. Large families were often preferred for these positions because they could manage multiple locks at a time with a small increase in pay.
