Quick Facts

Cant Ranch Historic District
Significance:
The Cant family needed a bigger home for their family.
Step inside the little log house on the left. The Cant family made use of the log cabin built by the Officers as a bunkhouse for hired men. Space in the loft stored supplies for when they trailed sheep to their summer range in the nearby mountains. Root vegetables stowed in a cellar under the cabin floor were accessible through a trap door and shelves held home canned fruit.

By 1917, the Cant family had grown to include three more children. Overnight guests were also common as travelers passed through the area. Three plans from a 1903 book of Radford American Homes were combined to create the house plan. Work started on the big house in 1917 and finished in 1918. Lumber for the house came from within thirty miles. The estimated building price was between two and three thousand dollars.
