The Bollman Bridge (located on Salisbury St) is the best way for bikes to access the towpath from Park Headquarters.
In the late 19th Century, engineering was changing the face of transportation methods regarding bridge construction. Prior to 1850, most of the bridges in America were wooden. Then stronger and longer lasting iron bridges came into use. Built in 1879 by Civil engineer Wendell Bollman, a pioneer in engineering of iron bridges, this is one of the few remaining “Bollman Bridges” in the United States. It is the only Bollman Bridge on the C&O Canal and stands as a testament to 19th Century engineering achievements.
