Information
Beaufort National Cemetery is located in Beaufort County on Port Royal Island within the city limits of Beaufort, SC. The cemetery is distinguished by a landscape plan in which the burial sections are arranged in the shape of a half-circle with roads arranged like the spokes of a wheel.
The original interments in the cemetery were men who died in the nearby Union hospitals during the Civil War. This included some of the very first Black soldiers to serve in the United States Army. Today it remains an active national cemetery managed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. It serves as the final resting place for thousands of our nation’s service members and their families that live and serve in the surrounding community.
While the site is not a part of Reconstruction Era National Historical Park, park rangers work with the cemetery staff to interpret the Civil War and Reconstruction era history of the cemetery and those buried there. Please visit the Veterans Affairs website for information and regulations about visiting the national cemetery.
