Captured by Black Federal troops on June 15, 1864, Confederate Battery #8 would be renamed Ft. Friend for the house of the Friend family nearby. It would see action on March 25, 1865. Battery #8 became part of the second line of siege works for the U.S. forces. The following year U.S. guns in this fort would help repel the Confederate breakthrough at Ft. Stedman.
