Bastion 4
Cellular Signal, Scenic View/Photo Spot
Bastion 4 was possibly the most important point of the five-point star that makes up the shape of Fort McHenry. The bastion lines up directly with the point of the peninsula meaning that it had views and areas of fire facing both the entance to Baltimore's harbor and the Ferry Branch of the Patapsco River that could be used to flank the city's defenses. The British Royal Marines attempted just such a maneuver in the early morning hours of September 14, 1814, however they were spotted and fired upon, stopping the attempted flank of the fort.
Today bastion 4 is a scenic location overlooking the end of the peninsula, memorial cherry blossom groves, and views of Baltimore maritime activity. The location is only accessible by steps or the path that leads from bastion 5 to bastion 3.
