The point of the star-shaped fort that faces towards the city of Baltimore.

Bastion 1 is the site where, in July of 1861, General John Dix of the U.S. Army took a group of women who were protesting federal occupation. It was here that Dix threatened to bomb Baltimore, declaring that, "... if there should be an uprising in Baltimore, I shall be compelled to try to put it down; and that gun is the first that I shall fire."

Today Bastion 1 overlooks the East lawn and faces directly towards the Visitors Center. Visitors can easily access this location by walking through the main star fort entrance, taking an immediate right, waking up the brick pand and into the grass.
