When Highway 240 was originally constructed, crews carved tunnels into the Badlands formations. However, the soft rocks of the Badlands erode easily, which created structural problems that could become serious hazards later. The tunnels were soon removed to provide a safer drive through the Badlands. Some sites, like this one, have slopes hugging Highway 240, where the tunnels used to be.
