In 1803, seven free Black men bought land on West Street to establish the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Annapolis. The early congregation included many who were enslaved. In 1838, a wood frame church building was erected at this location on West Street. This current brick Gothic-style church, built in 1888 and expanded in 1976, is known now as Asbury United Methodist Church. Asbury Methodist is the oldest African American congregation in the City of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County.
