Welcome to Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, a unit of the National Park Service!
This site preserves the remains of the Allegheny Portage Railroad, which was a critical link for the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal from 1834 to 1854. Using a system of inclined planes and other more level stretches of railroad, the Portage allowed canal boats and their goods and passengers to go from one section of the canal up and over the Allegheny Mountains to the other section so they could continue on their journey between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
