King Street - A New Begining

King Street was one of the main streets of Christiansted in the 1700s. It was a place of business, trade, and daily life.

After his mother died, Alexander Hamilton likely lived along on this street with merchant Thomas Stevens and his family. The exact location of the house is not known, but it was somewhere in this area. Just a short distance away stands what is now Government House, a building that reflects the kind of architecture and community Hamilton would have known.

Living here marked a turning point for Hamilton. In the Stevens household, he found stability and support. He also formed a close friendship with Edward Stevens, a bond that lasted for life.

Around him, King Street was busy with merchants, shoppers, and sailors moving between the town and the harbor. Goods were bought and sold, and news from across the Atlantic arrived with each ship.

As you stand here, imagine Hamilton as a teenager walking these streets; watching, learning, and beginning to find his place in the world.
