Alexander Hamilton's Christiansted Wharf
In the late 1700s, Christiansted Wharf was a busy port. Ships from many places came and went, carrying goods, news, and people.
In May 1765, the Hamilton family arrived here from Nevis. Alexander was a young boy, stepping into a world full of trade and change.
Eight years later, he stood here again—but this time, he was leaving. At about 17 years old, Alexander sailed away to British North America to continue his education.
He arrived in New York just as tensions were rising. The American Revolution was about to begin.
As you look out over the water, imagine the moment he left. A young man standing on this very shore, heading toward an uncertain future, one that would help shape a new nation.
