Alexander Emmanuel Rodolphe Agassiz was born in Switzerland in 1835 and emigrated to the United States with his family in 1846. Agassiz played a major role in the founding and operation of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company. This statue was unveiled at the dedication of the Agassiz Park in Calumet in 1923. It has since been moved to sit next to the old Calumet and Hecla Public Library. Although he died nearly a century ago, and the mine has been closed for four decades, Agassiz's legacy can still be seen in Calumet today. Company-built houses still provide homes for Calumet residents. Students still attend classes in schools built at company expense. Churches still stand on original company land.
