A naturalist by trade, Alexander Agassiz used this as his summer residence while managing Calumet & Hecla operations. Alexander Emmanuel Rodolphe Agassiz was born in Switzerland in 1835 and emigrated to the United States with his family in 1846. Agassiz played a major role in the founding and operation of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company.
