Thompson Island Picnic Area is located on the east side of Thompson Island right before entering Mount Desert Island. This wide-open picnic area provides great views of Mount Desert Narrows waterway. There are many picnic tables and fire pits placed throughout the field.  

What to Expect
When drivers pull into the Thompson Island parking area, keeping to the right there is a small parking area with one accessible parking spot and a few picnic tables just off the paved area. If drivers continue past this, there is a larger parking lot with angled parking spaces. There are two accessible parking spots at the beginning of the parking lot. These spots are designated by paint on the ground and sign on a post. 

On the left of the larger parking lot is an accessible restroom down a small, paved sidewalk. There are three restroom compartments, one on each side, and one single stall in the middle.

All picnic sites are located on a grassy uneven surface. The tables may be up to 50 feet away from the parking area and can have a pit fire next to them. The table locations are subject to change and may be different than shown in the image gallery below.

To get to the field visitors will have to go in between large boulders that have two feet of space in between.
