The trailhead in the Abbotts Bridge Unit is located on the downstream side of the boat ramp. Stop by the Information Kiosk near the parking lot before starting down the trail.

The trail follows the river downstream for about a mile ending at the soccer fields in the Scott Hudgens Park operated by the City of Duluth. The river bank is very steep along the trail providing no access to the river. However, due to the steep banks there are some scenic views of the river. In the early part of the trail are some very impressive oak trees.
