The building at 414 Fifth Street has been home to a variety of businesses over the years. In 1893, it was a Boots and Shoes store. Later known as The People's Shoe Store, it was owned by John Mcphail and Thomas Evans, who was also the proprietor of the Bee Hive Shoe Store up the street. By 1908, the storefront was split in two, 414 A and B. 414 A was a tailor shop and 414 B was a framing and picture shop. By 1930 the Ace Sign Company occupied the building, advertising "No sign too large, or too small. Commercial designing, posters, pictures, sho’ cards, displays, gold leaf, windows, metal, wood, bulletin signs." Now this historic building is home to North End Framing, owned by Paul Grathoff, who has worked to restore the building over the years he’s owned it.
