E.J. Ryan opened his first grocery and general merchandise business in the early 1870s on 5th Street. The "New Ryan Block" on 6th Street was built in 1898, replacing a single-story wood frame warehouse. This building stands three stories tall complete with two upper floors of apartments and two separate storefronts below which displayed the growing wealth of this prominent merchant. Businesses that resided in the first floor of this block included a bicycle shop, grocery, motion picture theater, and printing shop.
