The sign between this building's doors offers a clue to its historic purpose and significance. Paine, Webber and Company was a Boston-based investment bank and stock brokerage firm. Its presence in Calumet demonstrates the importance of eastern investment to area copper mines and the interest of local residents in the American financial market. William Paine of Paine, Webber & Co. invested heavily in area mining companies, and co-founded the Copper Range Railroad and the Copper Range Consolidated Company.
