The first church on this site was named St. Joseph's Church and served a diverse congregation of Slovenians, Croatians, Austrians, and Italians. As the Croatian and Italian immigrant populations grew, they built their own churches. The 500 seat Jacobsville sandstone church that stands on the corner of 8th and Oak today was built in 1902 after the original church burned. In 1966, after declining populations forced several congregations to combine, the church was renamed St. Paul the Apostle; it remains an active congregation today.
