220 5th Street was built sometime before 1884. It was occupied by four different types of businesses over the years. Between 1884 and 1897 it was home to a dry goods and clothing store. By 1897 it was occupied by a saloon owned by the Blum family. Henry and Benjamin Blum also owned or operated saloons at 464 5th Street and 417 Pine Street.
By 1912 the Blums had closed their saloon here and this storefront was occupied by a drugstore for many years thereafter. In 1930 it was known as the Metropolitan Pharmacy, a Rexall store. At that time offices upstairs were occupied by conservation officer Joseph J. Werschay, chiropractor Thomas M. Uksila, the Calumet Mutual Fire Insurance Company, and veterinary surgeon James O’Neil. 220 5th Street was then occupied by Herman Jewelers which was one of the oldest businesses in Calumet.
