Historical/Interpretive Information/Exhibits

This structure dates from the founding of the North Manitou Island volunteer rescue station in 1854. The design of the Volunteer Rescue Station appears to be based on standard plans developed for a series of 28 stations established by the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. It is the oldest structure associated with the USLSS on the Great Lakes and is believed to be the only surviving example of its kind in the country.
