Here stood the Holman Block and two other contributing structures to the Calumet National Historic Landmark District. They were destroyed by fire on May 21, 2021.
These buildings contained apartments, commercial enterprises, and more than 100 years of memories. On the evening of May 21, 2021 and into the night, a disastrous fire of unknown causes destroyed this substantial portion of the block. Heroic efforts by community members ensured that residents made it safely out; twelve local units of volunteer firefighters led by Calumet’s own ensured that the fire spread no further.
The Holman block was built around 1896, replacing a two-story wood frame building housing a watcher, photographer, and grocer. Holman and Williams were grocers. In 1900, they rented the other half of their store to Izzy Blumenthal, who sold dry goods and clothes. Later, the Holman Block shared space with a gallery for the flourishing medium of photography.
