Quick Facts

Information, Permits Issued, Wheelchair Accessible

The Wawona Wilderness Center at Hill's Studio is staffed by knowledgeable rangers and volunteers who are ready to help answer your questions, provide directions, and hand out maps and brochures. Pay them a visit before heading out on your wild adventure.

Wilderness permits are required year-round for any overnight stay in the Yosemite Wilderness. Permits are not required for day hikes (except if hiking to Half Dome). Wilderness permits are only issued to a limited number of people for each trailhead in order to provide outstanding opportunities for solitude, as required by the Wilderness Act. Learn more about obtaining a wilderness permit.

Most of Yosemite is covered in snow during winter. Before planning a wilderness trip during this time, please ensure you're prepared for winter conditions.

Hours

8 am to 5 pm daily

The Wawona Wilderness Center is closed seasonally from approximately mid-October through late May. During this time, self-registration wilderness permits are available from outside the nearest permit station to each trailhead.

Getting Here

Walk from the lodge or park at the Wawona Store and Pioneer Gift Shop parking area, located on the Wawona Road (Highway 41), and follow the marked path up the hill.

Bear Canisters

Bear resistant food canisters are required in the Yosemite Wilderness. Use a canister to store all food or scented items when left unattended. Whenever food or scented items are out, please keep them within arm's reach, even while day hiking.

Accessibility

Two designated accessible parking spaces and a mechanical lift are available at the rear of the studio. Use the intercom located next to the lift to request assistance from staff for operation of the lift.
