In 1942, the WWII cruiser the USS San Francisco sustained 45 hits and 25 fires during the Battle of Guadalcanal in the Pacific. In memory of the valiant efforts of the San Francisco's crew, a shrapnel-scarred piece of the bridge tower from the cruiser is accompanied by plaques and a flagpole to honor the ship and its men at this site.
