Based on Joe Rosenthal's iconic photo of US Marines raising the flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, the US Marine Corps War Memorial honors the marines who served in all conflicts in US history. The entire cost of the statue was donated by US Marines, friends of the Marine Corps, and members of the Naval Service.
